Musical Mirror
philosophical and poetic thoughts on music
Generative music allows sound to evolve autonomously over time, creating dynamic and unpredictable compositions. In this case study, we explore a three-instrument setup that demonstrates how simple tools can produce rich, ambient generative music.
Generative is a Max for Live device that produces evolving MIDI events.
Key features:
Adjustable circle sizes for note generation
Control over note speed and duration
Fundamental and highest pitch selection
Choice of musical scales to shape tonality
It can serve both as a melodic tool and as a rhythmic engine. Pair it with your own sound samples to expand its expressive possibilities.
Colette Synth is an FM synthesizer ideal for sound design.
Capabilities:
Select carrier and modulator wave types
Adjust their ratio with a potentiometer
Modify harmonics and brightness
Control with a practical envelope section
In this setup, Colette Synth receives MIDI from Generative, producing notes in a pentatonic minor scale to evoke a dreamy, almost oriental atmosphere.
Ableton LFOs allow mapping any parameter, controlling both the waveform and modulation speed. In our chain, three independent LFOs create subtle, evolving changes:
Waveform Selection – Random jumps at a slow rate create surprising, non-repetitive timbral shifts.
Carrier/Modulator Ratio – A sine wave produces smooth, continuous transitions.
Harmonic Richness – Random modulation brightens or darkens the sound unpredictably, avoiding looped patterns.
All LFO rates are slow, ensuring gradual, flowing changes suitable for ambient generative music.
This setup forms a self-running musical algorithm capable of generating evolving compositions for hours or even days.
Applications include:
Sound installations
Exhibition sonorizations
Ambient soundscapes for physical spaces
Despite its simplicity, the combination of Generative + Colette Synth + LFOs creates complex, fluid music with minimal intervention.
