NEWTON GENERATOR

Newton Generator

is a gravity-based generative MIDI device for Ableton Live

where falling apples trigger notes inside a chosen scale and key.

In the example you can hear, the MIDI generated by Newton Generator

controls five different musical lines.

Two of them feature a random trigger at the beginning of the effects chain to introduce additional unpredictability.

Another line is routed through an arpeggiator

to create interesting repeated patterns,

while a drum track reacts to octave changes by switching the samples being triggered. Newton Generator drives the entire system, scanning and triggering all musical events.

In another example, I wanted to take this technique further and try it with an instrument you can find for free on this site. I tested how the MIDI generator would drive the Colette synth — which works on FM synthesis — and I have to say the result is more than satisfying.
